Content: 8/10

Beautiful graphics and well-done audio | Plenty of replay incentives

Just takes a couple hours to complete for one play through | Imperfect controls when starting out

Atlus brings us for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC a new downloadable game called Abyss Odyssey, which is a side-scrolling action platformer.  You assume the role of Katrien, who is a warrior created from the warlocks’s dreams as you venture into the abyss.  A hole populated with monsters has suddenly appeared in a village, and it is up to you to stop this situation from getting worse.

Here in Abyss Odyssey, you’ll be taking your character around as you jump and grab on to ledges as you progress through the level.  Along the way, you’ll come across jars, crates, and chests that consist of gold.  You can also visit the shopkeepers to purchase and acquire more useful items and powerful weapon.

There are plenty of enemies to battle in a one vs. one fighting fashion.  Luckily, you don’t need to remember much complex commands to get through the game as long as you now how to block and perform counters.  On top of that, pulling off combos are pretty easy thanks to some adequate control schemes behind Abyss Odyssey.

That said though, that doesn’t mean that the controls are perfect.  The movement and fighting seem to lack precision and accuracy to smoothly flow through the game. And when you explore through the platforming aspect, it turns out feeling slightly clunky and awkward. Nonetheless, players should be able to move on past this once they adjusted to and mastered the controls.

In Abyss Odyssey, you can build up your character’s mana, which in turn can be used towards your enemies for a benefit to you.  You see, when you tag and defeat your enemy, you collect its soul.  You can then change into its form with a push on the d-pad.  Considering that there are more than 30 enemy types, each having their own set of unique fighting skills and attributes, you’ll be preoccupied with revisiting Abyss Odyssey in playing with what would essentially be different characters.

And when your main character dies, the control switches over to a human soldier who would serve to seek revenge for your character.  While he is weaker and slower, if you can manage to reach this special altar, you can basically resurrect your main character back to life!

Each time you restart the game, the levels are redesigned so that each play through is unique, even on the same level.  Additionally, there are basically three entrances to the abyss that you unlock as you progress through the game. The first one leads to an easy but long path while the final one gets you quickly to the bottom but, of course, with a higher challenge attached to it.

So as you can see, Abyss Odyssey gives plenty of reason to come back and replay completed levels, even though the game can be completed in a matter of a couple hours.  But even so, there is a co-op mode to this title, in which case, the more players you get to beat the Warlock, the additional content you get to unlock.

In regards to the presentation, Abyss Odyssey is filled with lush designs and visuals coupled with some nice audio effects to help players feel immersed in the environments within.  It’s fairly decent when it comes to execution.

With all that in mind, Abyss Odyssey may not be that perfect in the beginning.  But those shortcomings can be quickly overlooked with all the replay incentives and luscious presentation that lies within this game.  You’ll definitely want to give this game a try as there is at least some degree of enjoyment you can get from the abyss.
