Retro City Rampage: DX (Nintendo 3DS)

8.8 Overall Score
Presentation: 8/10
Gameplay: 9/10
Content: 9/10

Plenty improvements and patches to fix the gameplay | Available map displayed on bottom touch screen

Missing 3D feature (which isn't that big of a deal)

Back in 2012, Vblank Entertainment released Retro City Rampage for almost every video game console and portable, that is except for the Nintendo 3DS. Now that’s about to change as the developer is bringing forth this very same game as a downloadable content available within the Nintendo eShop. But this time, it’s titled Retro City Rampage: DX!

Since I already covered a review previously for the Playstation Vita (which you can have a look here at http://jgghgames.com/?reviews=retro-city-rampage), I’m going to cover the improvements made and such. But before I commence, I would like to mention that Retro City Rampage: DX offers the same gameplay and presentation that I actually was impressed with upon first introduction. As a friendly reminder, the game basically offers a top-down perspective reminiscent of the original Grand Theft Auto. With various missions to engage in, you’ll definitely be rampaging all throughout.

That said, I should mention that even though the game has arrived for the Nintendo 3DS, you shouldn’t expect any 3D implementations to the graphics. That doesn’t mean that it’s not worth getting. On the contrary, the advantage for the Retro City Rampage DX version is the presence of the bottom touch screen.

Controls remain the same when you compare between the Vita and 3DS versions. However, in the latter case, you have the convenience of the map being displayed at all times. This proves to be of great use when you’re trying to get in on the action while navigating your way through. Thus, you eliminate the constant pausing and checking out where you are on the map.

Another great thing about Retro City Rampage DX is that it consists of all the upgrades and fixes right off the bat. Considering that the game was released in 2012, that’s a lot of patches that you have to go through. But not in this case here. You have more checkpoints included, thereby reducing the number of frustrating moments as a result of death. There are also some adjustments made to your weapons as well as the ability to move more freely while firing.

Looking beyond these improvements and enhancements, Retro City Rampage DX remains as exciting with a diverse number of nostalgic elements constantly being introduced. Additionally, the game really pokes fun at itself especially in the 8-bit realm. While the overall presentation may not be an attractive feature for gamers wanting state-of-the-art graphics and bass-heavy audio, it still has room in the hearts of players who can really appreciate classic gaming.

Retro City Rampage: DX arrival for the Nintendo 3DS is godsend. Considering that you can purchase this for $9.99 at the Nintendo eShop, it is a great price to pay for this type of game—plenty of 8-bit action and humor that redefines the word, RETRO.
