Impressive 3D effects | Same high quality of Star Wars-themed pinball tables

Graphics may be a bit rough around the edges for the textures

Zen Studios have been releasing mostly different kinds of pinball games and add-ons on various platforms, including the Nintendo 3DS.  Very recently, it has unleashed a new title called Star Wars Pinball which features three tables that were previously available for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Vita, and the WiiU.  I have already reviewed the add-on in my previous article (http://jgghgames.com/?reviews=zen-pinball-2-star-wars-add-on).  However, I will take this opportunity to explore the particular features available in the Nintendo 3DS version.

As I mentioned before, Star Wars Pinball for the 3DS consists of three tables, thus providing a little flavor for every types of fans.  There’s one themed with the Clone Wars for the kids who love the cartoon series.  Another consists of Boba Fett, which caters to those who are fans of this particular character.  Finally, you have Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back which answers to the fans who enjoyed the original movie series.  Each table offers their own variety in terms of appearance, challenges, and objectives, thereby prolonging the longevity of the title.

Just like in the other console version, you’ll be able to go into the settings for each table and adjust various aspects, including the number of balls you have to start with as well as how many you get during multi-ball.  However, making use of these options will forfeit your opportunity to have your score posted onto the online leaderboard.  Nonetheless, it’s a great way to adjust the difficulty as well as vary the gameplay accordingly.

Speaking of online, the various associated features are also present in the Nintendo 3DS version of Star Wars Pinball.  You’ll be able to compare your scores with your friends within the same console. Additionally, you can join in with your friends to combine your scores as you compete as either on the light or dark side of the force.  As a result, all scores for that particular you are in will combine to see who will reign as victorious in the end.  It’s an interesting way to get you to contribute towards the team and leave an impact.

Considering how similar Star Wars Pinball for the 3DS is in comparison to other console versions, there is one main difference that makes it stand out from the rest:  the 3D effect.  While it may not look particularly crisp or clear in terms of graphics, it does add a nice depth to overall visuals, thereby making the impression realistic.  The various ramps, flippers and bumpers do pop out of the screen, giving a relatively more authentic pinball experience.  In addition, there is some depth perception that makes it easier to judge as you watch the ball travel throughout the table.  Even the frame rate does not remain consistently smooth at times, the 3D effect compensates for this.

While Star Wars Pinball for the Nintendo 3DS may not be the best-looking version out there, it does offer a unique 3D effect that no other has to offer.  That said, Zen Studios has definitely continued its success in offering superior gameplay, nice variety in content and superb visuals as expected from before.  If you’re either a Star Wars or pinball fan, that you definitely want to pick this one up from the eShop for $4.99.  So what are you waiting for?  Pick a side and help bring balance to the force!
