Guitar Hero 5 could kick ass.

Guitar Hero 5 will let up to four players play on the same instrument at the same time. That’s four guitarists or four microphones and yes, even four drummers.

The game will also let you mix and match what instruments you want to play as a group, so you can set up the instruments you want, and only the instruments you want. The four-player drop-in, drop-out support is available in all modes of play, even career.

The game’s new Rockfest mode lets four players play in a few different head-to-head modes online or on the same console. As players go through the song the difficulty adjusts based on how you play. You drop down a level for every third missed note and jump up in difficulty for every 20 notes you land in a row. The player with the most points wins.

The driving force behind any Guitar Hero game is its soundtrack. This one will launch with a sweet selection of songs including music from Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Vampire Weekend and Johnny Cash.

The game will let you jump right in without dealing with menus or unlocking songs and all previously available downloadable music will be playable on Guitar Hero 5.
