Thanks to a 4.00 firmware update, 8BitDo 3rd party controllers now work with Nintendo Switch. These controllers are available on Amazon and are shaped in various retro styles to add a gamepad to a variety of devices.
Just set the  controller to “Switch Mode” after the update and it will work! Many users are saying it works like a dream.
