Very well presented graphically and audio-wise | Thought-provoking puzzles and deep messages

Rigid controls can take some time to get used to

There are no bounds when you try to measure the extent of a child’s imagination. This very concept is explored in Papo & Yo, a recent game that just has been released exclusively for the Playstation Network.  What we have here is a perspective through the eyes of a child during extenuating circumstances.  Furthermore, Papo & Yo is an adventure that consists of puzzles that challenges the mind.

You assume control of a little boy named Quico, whose friend is a pink giant monster.  Throughout the game, you will have the main character leading Monster (that’s his name, really!) through various places. This is done by dropping coconuts at certain spots or areas since these are his favorite food.  Doing so will have Monster turn on a gadget or open up an area that was blocked previously.

As you focus on the visual presentation of Papo & Yo, you’ll notice how unique it really is.  The graphical design and art work are done exceptionally well.  And the detail should not go unnoticed especially with some of the objects and background within the environments.  Papo & Yo is definitely a treat to look at with a lot of visual style and awe-inspiring effects incorporated as part of this surreal gameplay. Complementing the game’s presentation is the audio which effectively sets the mood and tone of the setting you’re in.

When you progress further in the game, the difficulty increases accordingly as more of the story and ultimately the truth are uncovered.  There are also other elements added to the mix, like the robot named Lula that equipped with a jetpack.  Papo & Yo becomes deep in meaning and therefore is thought-provoking.  One can say that the relationship between Quico and Monster is an allegory to the relationship between a boy and his father with substance abuse.

The control scheme can be a mixed bag here.  Sometimes, Quico moves with ease and such responsiveness.  But other times, as in during the platforming aspect, it can be quite a challenge.  While it can be quick and easy to get started with such a control scheme, it’ll take some time to get used to.

Because there are no deaths or game over, you simply be placed back to the last saved location.   Therefore, it becomes more of a test of solving puzzles which then allows you to focus more without having much pressure.  Nonetheless, there will be occasions where you need to spend a little more time and effort figuring out the solution to the puzzle presented before you.  Thankfully, there are clues or hints to help you out along the way.

As you journey through the gameplay in Papo & Yo, you’ll come to notice the atmosphere and surroundings that can be altered and manipulated.  For instance, you’ll see buildings coming to life just by using a large-sized key. They actually grow legs and move about like ants as they line up one after the other.  This gives you an idea of how wacky and out-of-this-world Papo & Yo can be.  It provides an interestingly surreal experience that few games offer.

As stated earlier, Papo & Yo provides an out-of-this-world experience that gamers need to enter into.  It’s more than just a game; it’s a work of art that needs to be appreciated.  Papo & Yo may very well help to set the standard in terms of creativity in the world of gaming.  The presentation is top-notch which makes it a treat to look at and listen to.  Plus, you’ll be preoccupied with the puzzles that will also stimulate your minds.   This is one Playstation game that you shouldn’t miss and it’s ready to be purchased for $14.99.  So don’t let your imagination get the better of you.  Instead, be taken away Papo & Yo’s thought-provoking adventure that calls for deep thinking.
