Cubemen 2 (Wii U)

8.6 Overall Score
Presentation: 8/10
Content: 9/10
Replay Value: 9/10

Interesting blocky presentation | Lots of levels both from developers and users combined

Camera controls can be difficult | Lacking computer AI can make gameplay repetitive

Having been released for the PC and iOS, it appears that Cubemen 2 is branching out this time over to the Nintendo Wii U.  And since its initial release, there have been a huge number of community-created levels over the years.   Lucky for owners of the Nintendo Wii U, this means that this very content is making over to this console.  How will this tower defense game turn out?

When you load Cubemen 2, you’ll be easily swayed into its rules and mechanics.  Here, you have a tower that needs to be protected from the waves of enemies coming to attack.  As a result, you will need to build these soldiers (ie. cubemen) who can move around and attack on their own at anything that enters their range. Developing a strategy and coming up with the most effective blend of your attack and defense units is pertinent when trying to reign victorious in this game.  You’ll also want to figure out the best position to place them in while at the same time ensure that you have enough artillery to protect your tower.

There are a variety of these soldiers that you can build and command.  You have the quick but basic ones with the weak shooting ability as well as the strong and powerful snipers that are slow-moving.  In addition, there are those that have an explosive and long attack range.  And finally, there are those that carry flamethrowers that give a much powerful short-range damage on the enemies.

On the Nintendo Wii U, Cubemen 2 differentiates itself from its previous versions on account of its utilization of the gamepad.  While it simply is just a mirror image of what shows up on the TV screen, it is more effective and ideal to use the Wii U gamepad screen during gameplay.  Nevertheless, some players may find this to be a bit redundant since it does not go above and beyond like what other Wii U games deliver.  The controls may be a bit clunky due to some difficult camera movements.  However, with given time and dedication, it’ll be easy to control and choose your commands accordingly with little troube.

In Cubemen 2, you have a variety of modes to engage in.  By default, you can play the standard tower defense where you have the opportunity to earn trophies from each map.  You also have the skirmish mode which involves you attacking enemy towers while at the same time getting you to defend your own.  Furthermore, there’s the capture the flag where you have to (as the name suggests) capture your opponent’s flag.  Finally, Cubemen 2 includes a territory capture mode.  This particular gameplay will require you to send your units around the map in order to change the color of the ground to your team’s.

Plenty of levels originally from the Cubemen 2 game are well balanced in terms of the tower defense action and gameplay.  On top of that, you have thousands upon thousands of user-created levels (back when it was first released for the PC and iOS) which lengthen this Wii U title’s longevity.  Playing against the computer may feel somewhat lacking on account of its low AI capabilities. Consequently, this aspect of the game can really grow old and repetitive.

Luckily, to add further to the fun, all the levels can be engaged via multiplayer where up to six teams are present.  This brings forth a lot of mayhem and craziness when playing online with others.  And since you can cross play across the PC, iPad and Nintendo Wii U, there is a potential community waiting to put their skills to the challenge.

In terms of the presentation, Cubemen 2 has a block-like appearance for the characters depicted in the game.  This type of style is appealing as it gives this pseudo-retro look that can be appreciated by various types of gamers.  There’s a great degree of customization in terms of the characters’ skins, which can vary from the medieval times to the futuristic era. And tack on the simple yet magnificent backgrounds and you have a great-looking game.

As the community for Cubemen 2 continues to grow, this just means that its replay value and amount of content will do so too.  While there are some minor setbacks, it’s current price of $7.99 at the Nintendo eShop is a nice addition to include to your Wii U library.
