Spot The Differences: Party (Nintendo Wii U)

5.8 Overall Score
Presentation: 5/10
Gameplay: 6/10
Longevity: 6/10

Up to 4 players can join in on the challenge | More than 300 photos to keep you busy

Graphics and audio lacks lasting impressions | Gameplay can get monotonous and repetitive

Spot The Differences: Party has just been released for the Wii U as a downloadable game in the Nintendo eShop thanks to Sanuk Games.  Will this particular title be well received during a party?

When you jump into the gameplay, Spot The Differences: Party will present to you two photos side by side that appear almost alike except for five differences.  Your objective is to find all these differences before the time is up.  There are some kickbacks that you can execute in the event that you wish to move along quickly, however these are limited.  For instance, if you need to add more time, you simply tap on the corresponding icon on the Wii U gamepad.  Or if you’re stuck on finding that last difference and time is about to be up, tap on the lifeline icon (of the magnifying glass) and the game will find it for you.

While this may sound easy, the actual task itself is pretty tough considering the subtlety of the variations between the photos.  As such, players will be gluing their eyes to the screen as they determine where the discrepancies lie.  And that’s essentially it.  There’s no other gameplay other than finding all the differences needed.  Spot The Differences: Party does have hundreds of photos for you to go through.  So the longevity is evident in this respect.

You can use either the Wii U gamepad or the Wii remote to play this game.  Furthermore, four players in total can engage in the challenge.  Do note though that even though you have one person playing on the gamepad, you’ll still need four Wii remotes in total to have three other players join in.  This is because of the first player being designated according to the game to both the gamepad and remote.  Looking past this, the controls are very simple to go figure out as you simply move your cursor, point and click.

One major complaint I have is how briefly the game shows the solutions when you happen to use the lifeline for the last difference.  When I play these types of games, I really am interested to find out where I failed.  However, in the case of Spot The Differences: Party, you don’t get that opportunity to learn.  So it can be quite frustrating.

If it weren’t for this, I would say that this Wii U game would be appropriate to pass the time casually with friends.  I wouldn’t go as far as saying that you’ll get some exciting times with Spot The Differences: Party, unless you include some alcohol during the experience.  But playing cooperatively does have its merits over playing on your own.  You can always have a friendly competition with your companions.  The single-player sessions are where this game will potentially lose player’s interest since you can only play so much before it gets repetitive and monotonous.

In terms of the graphics, there aren’t much elaborate designs or background to impress.  Nor does the audio have much to offer, especially when the music can abruptly cut out after a level completes, thus feeling a bit unusual and somewhat annoying.

Whether or not you’ll find Spot The Differences: Party! worthwhile depends on how much you enjoy these types of games.  While this may not be the most impressive title for the Nintendo Wii U, it does have something to offer at the very least.
