Short time to complete

Gamers were attacked by these “blobs” of fun and amusement when Tales from Space: About a Blob was released on the Playstation 3.  Now, DrinkBox Studios is at it again with its newest in the series called Mutant Blobs Attack this time available for the PS Vita.  How much more appetite will gamers have for this newest Tales from Space?

For the story, you have the mutant blobs that are invading the planet and growing in size as they consume everything they come across.  And then you have the humans who are trying to get rid of these horrid beings. It seems that this is going to be terrible ordeal for humanity.  Well, as a blob, your job is to take part in destroying humanity!

You control a yellow-colored blob with spikes that rolls around and grows larger as it consumes items that are small enough.  In the beginning, you start so tiny that you’re probably unnoticeable to mankind.  But as you progress further in the game, you’ll be a force to be reckoned with.  You’ll become big enough to take over the world!

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is essentially a 2D platformer.  The gameplay is entertaining and fast-paced during times when you travel quickly through pipes.  It sort of plays out like Sonic The Hedgehog when you get to watch your character zoom across the screen and you have to react quick if you want to get into that alternative path within that small window of opportunity.

The game has six main areas that are divided into four levels and one bonus stage.  They’re all gleaming with vibrant and solid colors.  On top of that, they’re quite diverse in terms of the settings that they take place in, including a college and army base.  However, the levels themselves only take a matter of minutes to complete.  And on that point, they are not that difficult in the first place, making the gameplay short-lived even further.

At various points in the level, you’ll come across a barrier or plug that you must fulfill the size prerequisite before you can pass.  As a result, you’ll need to go around the area and find enough stuff to absorb so that you can reach that size.  Along the way, you’ll encounter blue dots which you can collect to earn a higher score.  You may end up going back and forth during the level to explore any missed opportunities for growth, but it still manages to remain fun and enjoyable.

During the bonus stage, you would use the tilt controls on your Vita to roll your blob around into a solid ball as you plow over various objects that gradually increase in size, which in effect will cause your blob to grow accordingly.

Your face buttons are used for jumping and performing a boost thruster.  But as well, you can stick to or repel off objects that have a purple glow by using the magnetism ability your blob possess. This is important when you need to get your blob past certain obstacles and avoid death traps.

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack also makes use of the Vita’s touch screen features.  To illustrate, when you see objects and platforms with a green glow dot, you can control them with the “powers of touch.” For instance, you can end launching your blob across the screen.  This adds an element of puzzle-solving which makes puts your mental abilities to the challenge.  But there isn’t much innovation here though.

Technically, Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack can be completed in about 5 hours.   Nonetheless, the game gives you a reason to revisit for another “attack.”  In each level, there are two friendly blobs waiting to be rescued. Some can be hidden and will require you to be attentive if you don’t want to miss them.

Looking at the graphics, the style is cute and funny while the design is well done and colorful.  Everything has a pleasing and welcoming appearance while the cartoon-like animation works effectively with the light-hearted atmosphere.  The music also fits well with the presentation as it gives this upbeat impression.

Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack may not be able to “attack” your interest levels for long periods of time.  But for a Vita title that offers good graphics, friendly-looking presentation, and light-hearted gameplay all for $7.99 from the Playstation Store, you can’t go wrong here.  Due to its charm, you may very well want to be a part of the mutant blob itself.
