Abudance of characters | Very flashy presentation

Gameplay can be short

Characters from the worlds of both Marvel and Capcom are coming together once again to engage in some battling action.  Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 has arrived for the Playstation Vita and it’s here to bring a total of 48 characters to fulfill your fighting needs. So, choose your team wisely as you’ll be taking on your opponents at the convenience of your portable console.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 has a large number of characters to choose from, including new ones like Ghost Rider and Phoenix Wright that weren’t in the previous titles.  After you choose three characters to form your team, it’s off to the battlefields against your computer or human opponents online.  While fighting, you can swap characters so that they can rest and recover some of the damage that your opponents have given them.  As well, this allows you to diversify the types of special moves you can execute since every character have their unique sets of attacks, attributes, and appearances.  Whoever you choose, you can combine your special attacks into your Hyper combos if your Hyper gauge meter is filled up.

Right off the bat, you’ll notice Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 having very colorful and sharp graphics presented in a cel-shaded comic-book style.  And while you’re attacking, executing combos and throwing projectiles at each other, the explosion and sparkling effects really stand out.  While I’m not a huge fan of the music, there are quite a number of tracks since each character has his or her own theme.  So when kill off one character, the music changes to the next character that comes out.  Also keeping the game lively is the dialogue from the characters during battles as well as the sounds of the projectiles and attacks.

In a fighting game like this, effective controls are very important.  Without them, it would be difficult to pull of any combos as well as special moves.  In Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, the controls still remain consistent with its previous titles.  Hence, players are already familiar with what the buttons correspond to.  The game also allows you to map the buttons to perform special moves right away if you want the convenience.  Therefore, even if you’re not as skilled as the veterans out there, you’ll still be able to finish a combo off with a special move, which would be the ultimate way to take on your opponents.

The touch mode allows you to use the screen to control your characters and attack accordingly.  Specifically, to move you just simply swipe your finger across the screen in the direction you want him or her to go in.  Then to perform combos, you just continue to tap on your opponent.  It’s very easy to execute and frees you from memorizing the sequence of buttons you need to press had you gone with the traditional direction pad and face buttons.

If you play through the single-player mode, you’ll go through six rounds of battles against your computer opponents.  At the start, you get to choose the difficulty level, the amount of damage from attacks, and time limit.  Once you complete the six rounds, you’ll face off Galactus, who takes up essentially half the screen. He’s not really that difficult, but his single attacks can leave quite a punch, literally, if you’re not careful.  In addition, his special attacks can potentially drain a major part of your health even if you’re blocking.

But once you complete the single-player mode, it doesn’t end there.  The mission mode provides you with a bunch of objectives to complete for each character.   They’re mostly getting you to execute certain sequences of moves or combos, but it also helps you practice in getting better when you want to challenge someone online.  You also have the newly-added Heroes & Heralds mode where you team up with three character cards, each with a unique function and ability.  The more you play, the more points you get, thus, giving you reason never to leave Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 again.  Earn enough and you’ll unlock Galactus mode where you get to control Galactus himself!

For Capcom or even Marvel fans, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is an absolute buy for Vita owners.  It may not necessarily be a lengthy or in-depth game, but it’s familiar yet dynamic fighting experience should have players addicted to its marvelous goodness.  Get it for $39.99 and you’ll have an ultimate good time!
