Space. After so many space movies you wonder if after the first ground breaking few like Alien,Star Wars, and of course Star Trek can any space movie especially a remake cause you to be in awe. The answer is: Yes.
First of all I would like to applaud J.J. Abrams for how he re-energized the franchise and he did it in stride. Granted the first few minutes of the movie will be kinda boring and will make you say “What is going on here.” it’s still a good opening. You learn about Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Kirk’s (Chris Pine) upbringing and what made them who they are and why.
The movie gets going when Kirk and Spock enlist in star fleet you meet characters like Bones (Karl Urban) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana). It plays out like a college film with them all in the academy and of course they all don’t like each other. The casting was very good in the fact that you already know the people and just seeing them young and more energized is very fun and exciting.
The story on the other hand is where the real genius comes in. Nero (Eric Bana) at the start appears out of no where and fights against the USS Kelvin Kirk’s fathers ship. He appears at Vulcan and Spock and Kirk try to stop him from destroying the planet.
In a great plot twist involving Leonard Nimoy, Kirk assumes Command of the Enterprise and fights against Nero. The film is a well put together and directed with a passion for the material. The comedy is through out the movie but not to much or cheesy. The effects are top notch and is nonstop excitement from one scene to the next.
I know that this isn’t the best review being my first and all, but I have a story from the theater that not many around where I live experience. When the credits rolled everyone in the theater gave it a standing ovation. All in all this movie is the Dark Knight of 2009. See it one time and find out.
B-dar out.
