How many do we need?

How much storage do you need on your game console?

I can remember when you did not even need a storage device. Then I remember the PS2 memory card that had 32MB. When I bought that card I thought to myself, “Why will I ever need that much space?” Now it seems we can't have enough storage. That, or the console manufacturers can't give us enough.

The 360 started off with a 20GB hard drive. I thought that was plenty for the longest time. I still have the first hard drive that I ever had and it still has 6GB of space left. After the 20GB they come with the massive 120GB hard drive. Now I find out that Microsoft is cutting the price of the 360 by $50 so they can make way for a 60GB system. That may be the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

Sony is not any better, but they at least they can give justice to their madness. I read that Sony may announce a 120GB system. As it stands they have a 40GB, 80GB and already done away with the 20GB and 60GB versions. Most people have a hard time dishing out the money for a 80GB system. How much is the 120GB system going to be? When buying a new Sony system you can tell yourself that you need the space because of game installs. The upcoming Soul Caliber game is said to take 6.5GB to install. So at least Sony has some defense for the ever-growing hard drive sizes.

To make everything simple why not just buy the 360 Elite system. Or buy the biggest PS3 that is out at the time. Then you can say you're done with it. I'm sure that some people may not agree with me, but why do you ever need more than 20GB or 80GB depending on what system you have?

I think if our respective console makers would focus on long-standing problems instead of making new ones, this gaming world that we all love would be a lot better.
