Split/Second Review

I wanted this game when I first seen footage it over a year ago. Like many games that I think I want, the closer release came the more I lost interest. Then I found it at Target for $49.99. I gave in and made the buy. I can tell you now that I’m glad I did.

The controls are pretty straight forward. Pretty much like any other racing game you would come across. Now, that sounds negative. It’s really not. It really means that when you play the game, if you are a racing fan the controls will fell familiar and comfortable to you. Well, they did me anyway.

There is a great feature on the game. The feature is to be able to view an instant replay of the previous power play (I’ll explain soon). I also love the slow motion effect you get when you have a close call from a near by explosion. The games steering and drifting(Ect) feels great as well. The drifting seems to be a bit much to get used too, based on other games. To control drifts you have to repeatably tap the accelerator to keep a steady drift. Those things being said.

This game is simply amazing. I have played plenty of racing games that have ‘close calls’ and ‘intense action’. You don’t really know intense or close until you have raced a time trial where helicopters fire heat seeking missiles at you. Or until you have pass multiple semi trucks carrying and dropping mines all around you. Those are just options of race type to choose from. When I first started playing I thought the game felt very repetitive and boring. I quickly realized that the repetitive nature of the game came from the tracks. For the most part all the tracks are very similar. The change comes from the fact that no matter how many times you race these similar tracks, race is never the same.

Rather it be an amazing escape or a grand explosion. You are always on your toes. Speaking of grand explosions, let’s talk about the power plays. Power Plays are what you use to set off the explosions that I’ve talked so much about. You gain Power Plays by drifting, drafting, jumping and pretty much anything that requires more than steering. You can also use Power Plays to open route changes and short cuts. I’ll be honest, I have yet to complete the game, but I’m over half way through the season and it just keeps getting better. I am nor currently able to do a review on the multiplayer aspect of the game. Based on the single player and how close race finishes are, plus with all the Power Plays I would have think that the multiplayer would be amazing as well.

Now, I know if I post this review and don’t have some comparison to Burnout, that will be the question that many of you ask me. Do I think that its better than Burnout? The answer to that question is simple.
