I Heart DLC

2009:  It looks like the first part of the year and maybe the last part will be DLC- friendly.  All those games that came out this past holiday season will be jumping on the DLC  train to make those already-good-games great.

DLC has become something to expect on games.  It has made me start to have a reason to hold onto the games that I buy.  The Fable 2 DLC was delayed until the end of this month.  There seems to be DLC scheduled for Fallout 3, Midnight Club:L.A. and Burnout:Paradise.   The whole point of this post was to go over just a few of those great DLC packs that we can expect in the next few months.  So with that being said, let’s get started.

To start with Fable 2, the DLC was supposed to come out last month, but was pushed back to January 13th.  The same content that I discussed in my end of the year post is still scheduled to be the pack.  Lionhead has said that it’s the first of many DLC packs that are coming out.   They have also stated that we could even see changes to the game play as far as property management and even the co-op function.

The next big pack that people are looking froward to is Fallout 3.

Bethesda has announced that the first pack is set to arrive sometime this month.  It will be called Operation:Anchorage. It’s a military simulation that takes players back to the historical battle of Anchorage, where Chinese invaders threatened the future of Alaska.  The Pitt follows in February and adds an industrial raider town in the remains of Pittsburgh, where players will face tricky allegiance decisions. Finally, Broken Steel arrives in March.  Here, players will be recruited into the Brotherhood of Steel and be swept up in the furious termination of all Enclave supporters in the Capital Wasteland.  Broken Steel takes Fallout 3 past the conclusion of the main quest.  There’s no word on exact pricing, although Pete Hines has once again stressed that the DLC will be similar in many ways to Oblivion’s add-on quest, Knights of The Nine.  If I remember correctly it was 800MS points or 10.00 dollars.

Midnight Club:LA has really become my crack.  So I am happy to find out that Rockstar will put out DLC that will be free.  The South Central Upgrade Map DLC will be a free download and encompass about a third of what Los Angeles offers.  Inside the new map will be additional competitions, races, music and new cars (including an SUV) to cruise around new locations like the Shrine Auditorium and Crenshaw Plaza.

Speaking of free DLC last year was the year that for the first time a game developers gave us game-changing and free content.  Of course I’m talking about Criterion Games.  Burnout:Paradise has more DLC coming this year and it’s not free, but worth the money for sure.  As it stands we have 5 DLC packs coming this year for the game.  First will be the party pack that gives the game a pass at the controller aspect.  Then we will get the Legendary car pack that will have 4 new cars.  After that the toy cars pack will be up for grabs, then comes the Boost Special pack.  Not a lot of info has been told about that one yet.  Then the one that we are all waiting for.   Big Surf Island.  It comes with a new vehicle, The Dust Storm.  Friday the 16th Criterion will announce one last pack for 2009.  No prices have been announced, but I think the wait will be well worth it.

So these are just a few of the packs coming for a handful of games in 2009.  Keep in mind it’s the first of the year and a lot of games have not been announced yet.  When more DLC packs have been announced I will do a follow-up to this blog and have all the info on those as well.  Till then get those points and credit cards ready.
