Is it still fun?

We all know gaming is fun, but do we still have fun?

At what point do people cross over from being a casual gamer to a hardcore gamer?  What makes people decide that whatever game or activity their involved in at the time has to be taken seriously?  These are questions I asked myself recently.

As I was looking at my stats for Burnout:Paradise I noticed that I have well over 200 hours online.  I lose just as many races as a n00b would.  It’s not because I’m bad at the game; it’s just that now I have fun on the game.  There was a time when it was all about being better than the day before.  Now it’s just about being more fun than the day before.  A thought that’s looked over by many gamers these days.

I used to enjoy playing games like Halo and Call of Duty.  I stopped playing those games because people stopped having fun.  It was not about playing with your friends anymore.  It’s about kill/death ratio and assists.  The maddening part about it is that it’s not just shooters it’s all games.  I can’t tell you the last time I was in a public room and have heard people just talking.  It’s about who’s better and who’s won more and way too much trash talk.

There has always been the trash talk factor in games, but never to the magnitude that it’s at now.  I think back to playing games like Duck Hunt.  I know it had points and levels.  All I cared about was shooting the ducks and sometimes the dog.  I think that’s a level of gaming that people surpass these days and it’s really a shame.  What do I know though?

Just remember the next time you fire up a game:  There’s nothing wrong with being the best, but there is more than one way to accomplish that.

I agree. This has been a complaint of mine since Halo 2 and CS:S made gaming truly mainstream. I don’t care if I have one uber-bajillion kills and 3 deaths or if I have 1 kill and 300 million bajillion deaths. If I had fun, then the game did what it was supposed too and I got my money’s worth.

If you aren’t having a good time, then what the heck are you doing? Sure, I’ve grinded out some games to achieve a “next level” before, but if you aren’t genuinely having fun, then what is the point?

I used to play Battlefield 2 on the computer with a bunch of guys from work. We’d have anywhere from 3 to 7 people on Teamspeak at night playing together on the same server. Over time, people stopped playing on a regular basis, and when it was just me on the server, I found that it was no fun at all.

To me, socialization in the multiplayer game is a gigantic portion of the enjoyment. There is nothing better than having voice chat with some great people while having fun playing a game at the same time.

I never knew how important it was/is to have communication in a multiplayer game until I got into Burnout Paradise and met the people I did. YOU ALL make the game fun and worth doing literally nothing in but jumps, showtimes, etc…. Every night is still ‘fun’ for me because the people I play with make it that way and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I don’t have the urge to play GTA 4 anymore because of some of the idiots I have been misfortunate enough to run into on multiplayer. Sad as I have been a huge GTA fan for years. People can make or break a gaming community so like-minded people should probably stick together, eh?
